Why is there no upfront cost? What's the catch?

Accepted Answer

It's how we decide whether to work together, so we treat it as our cost of finding the right projects rather than something to bill for. We only do it with companies we think we can genuinely help, which is why it isn't offered to everyone who asks. Two weeks is a cheap way for both of us to find out we're wrong, and a lot cheaper than three months into a build nobody should have started.

What do we get at the end of the two weeks?

A written recommendation you could hand to any developer: what's worth building, what isn't, how it breaks into phases, roughly what each phase costs and how long it takes, and the workflows and systems it has to fit around. It's documented properly and it's yours to keep whether you build with us or not.

Question 3

Are we committed to building it with you?

Accepted Answer

No. There's nothing to sign at the end of it and no obligation to go further. You own the document, so you're free to build it with us, take it to another supplier, or put it on the shelf until the timing is right. We would rather you did any of those than commissioned something on a hunch.

Question 4

What if the answer is that we shouldn't build anything?

Accepted Answer

Then that's what we'll tell you, and it does happen. Sometimes an off-the-shelf tool does most of the job and the sensible move is to buy it and spend the money elsewhere. Sometimes the problem is a process rather than software. Being able to say that is why we would rather run a discovery than write you a quote.

What do you need from us?

You don't need a spec and you don't need to know what you want built. What we need is access to the people who actually do the work, an hour or two of their time each across the fortnight, and whatever already exists: the spreadsheets, the forms, the systems, the workarounds everyone has built to get round them. You point us at the problems and we do the work from there.

Question 6

What does the build itself cost, if we go ahead?

That depends on what discovery says is worth building, which is why the order matters. Our published ranges start at £15,000 for a first version and run to £100,000 for larger multi-platform builds, all excluding VAT, and we don't take on projects under £10,000.
